Building this nation requires compromise.
We have transitioned from the politics of conflict—though not entirely gone—into this state of confrontational politics. It is time we moved beyond this and answered the call to embrace a politics of dialogue.
We must focus on the issues that unite us: our shared battles against poverty, disease, and illiteracy, and our collective pursuit of dignity for all. Our goal is to project Uganda on regional and international stages as a free, democratic, peaceful, and prosperous state.
We cannot afford to lose any opportunity to share ideas that champion the foundational principles upon which our country must stand. Cooperation and collaboration with institutions and individuals are not optional; they are necessary.
Therefore, let us dedicate the coming years to collaborating for the good of the country. In all your moves to build this nation, remove personal interests, temper the anger, and set aside the ego. Work for the country.
Platforms like the Inter-Party Organization for Dialogue (IPOD) exist precisely to address and solve the many challenges Uganda faces. While the electoral contests of 2021 have been legally concluded, there remain grave allegations that Ugandans are detained in prison due to their political affiliations and activities surrounding those elections. Securing their freedom and addressing their plight is not a partisan issue, but a national liability that falls upon all of us. For a dialogue to be meaningful and heal our nation, such critical issues must be on the table.
This is a specific appeal to those political leaders whose electoral pathways were challenged and who now understandably feel their energy to cooperate in forums like IPOD is low. To you, we say: please find the spirit of compromise. Work with everyone, not in spite of their weaknesses, flaws, and shortcomings, but with a recognition that our nation's challenges—including the imperative of justice and liberty for all citizens—are greater than any individual grievance. Your perspective is critical, and your active participation is essential for a dialogue that is truly inclusive and national in character.
